The Realities Of Cheap Dental Implants

The Realities Of Cheap Dental Implants

Why you should think twice before being tempted by cheap dental implant offers.

There is no disputing that dental implants are not a cheap way to replace a missing tooth. The cost of materials and the expertise needed to place these means that there are associated costs which may not apply with some other procedures. Patients who have had dental implants placed, however, largely feel that it is money well spent in order to have a long lasting and strong replacement tooth.

As you would also expect, prices do vary a little from practice to practice, but, as the standards required to maintain registration as a dentist in the UK are very high, there is no real scope for significantly reduced prices. This can sometimes tempt people to be persuaded by the many offers to have cheaper dental implants placed abroad.

The ‘benefits’

Most of you will probably have seen these offers, reducing the costs significantly and on the surface, this can seem quite tempting. Some even throw in the cost of flights and accommodation, meaning that it can be tempting to take the opportunity to get away for a short break too. Taken as read then, these offers may seem like a great idea, so why should people think twice before taking them up?

Understanding the risks

By taking up these offers, you could be taking very real risks with your oral health, and potentially risking significant discomfort too. Whilst we can accept that there may be some reduction in prices in some countries due to a lower cost of living, those with significantly reduced prices may also mean a reduction in standards too. We are sure that there are many excellent dentists abroad but the problem is that regulations vary from country to country and it can be extremely difficult to ascertain whether the dentists would match the quality that you would expect in the UK. Language barriers may also present problems, and, especially if you are a nervous dental patient, this could be quite a stressful experience given the level of expertise required to place an implant.

The biggest risk though, possibly comes in the form of cheaper dental implants being used. In order to cut costs, inferior dental implants may be used that do not integrate with the jawbone as well as they need to do in order to provide a strong and secure replacement tooth root, upon which the crown is attached. Whilst you may feel that the dentist has done a good job whilst you are there, the problems can arise later, when you are back in the UK. Infections can occur, and, if the implant does not fuse successfully with the bone, then not only may you experience discomfort, but the implant may come out, rendering the whole procedure useless.
