Children’s Dental Care in Bedford

Prevention is the key to a life of healthy teeth and gums.

2016 saw a large number of quite shocking headlines regarding the state of our children’s teeth.

Dental decay and the need to have teeth extracted was one of the main reasons for children to be admitted to hospital to have their teeth extracted.

This is obviously unacceptable and is also very distressing for the child involved. The greatest tragedy of it is, of course, that it is almost entirely preventable.

Family dental care

At The Dental Centre Bedford, we believe strongly in preventative dental care and would much rather see our patients improve their oral health care than have to perform restorative procedures when problems arise from neglect. This applies to all ages, but it is children who, perhaps, stand to gain the most from this approach. It is said that habits that we learn early on stay with us, often for the rest of our lives. This applies not only to ‘bad’ habits, but also to good ones, such as how well we take care of our teeth and gums.

Hygienist appointments

Our dental hygienists are ideally placed to help guide your child to preserve healthy teeth and gums throughout their lives, and consequently we recommend that any local parent arranges for their child to visit our local Bedford hygienist on a regular basis.

Hilary Sinclair, our regular hygienist is very experienced in treating children and is often able to help them to understand the importance of having a healthy mouth from a young age. Using appropriate language, she can help children to not only brush their teeth more efficiently, but also explain the role that high sugar levels has in the destruction of young teeth. Whilst this may not put young children off sugar entirely, it can certainly help them to recognise why they need to limit their sugar intake if they want to have strong and healthy teeth.

Avoiding the fear of dental visits

In addition to any direct and immediate benefits that young patients can gain from visiting our friendly Bedford dentist, a number of studies have indicated that visits to the dentist at a young age, can help people avoid the dental phobia that affects many adult patients.

Although it is unlikely that there will be any problems present at such an early age, we usually suggest that parents bring their child to us at around one year of age. This enables them to become familiar with the sights, sounds and smells of their local dentist.
