Whiter Teeth For Spring And Summer In Bedford

Leave your dull and discoloured smile behind….

Whiter teethPerhaps it is a bit over optimistic to think that the recent few days of sunshine will herald the beginning of a sunny and warm few months ahead; you can never be too sure here in the UK. Almost certainly though, there will be some fantastic days and certainly brighter and warmer than those behind us in recent months.

For most of us, the spring also brings a more positive mood as we soak up that vitamin D from the sunshine. We also tend to bring out our more colourful clothes too. If we really want to brighten up our appearance though, there is little point in making do with a dull and discoloured smile.

The fact is that people often judge us by our smile, especially when they meet us for the first time. It is said that our smile is one of the first things that people notice about us. It makes sense then, to make sure that our smile is as attractive as it can be, For some people. This might require committing to what is often a longer treatment, such as having their teeth straightened. Most people though can see a more immediate improvement by undergoing a straightforward and painless teeth whitening procedure at our Bedford dental clinic.

Teeth whitening popularity

Those of us in our fifties and beyond can probably remember a time when nobody had cosmetic dental treatment unless they were rich or famous. Nowadays though, it is very popular indeed and also affordable to a wider range of people. Whilst this is especially so with the younger generation, even older people are having treatments such as tooth whitening. After all, just because you are no longer as young as you used to be doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do what you can to maintain a good physical appearance.

Without a doubt, the teeth whitening procedure is the most popular cosmetic treatment that we provide at our clinic. There are many good reasons for this. Our custom home whitening treatment allows you to carry out the whitening at home, with improvements being seen within a week and the full results after just two weeks. This is all professionally done, of course, and isn’t the same as a kit that you can sometimes buy online. In fact, we strongly recommend that you don’t do that as there are kits out there with very high levels of the active whitening ingredient which can damage your teeth.

The benefit of having this treatment at The Dental Centre Bedford is that it is done under the supervision of a qualified dentist. A full health check will be done on your teeth and any issues, such as decay, treated before your whitening treatment starts. Impressions will be taken of your teeth which will ensure that the trays fit securely so that the whitening gel shouldn’t come into contact with your gums which could potentially cause painful burning. It also means that you can choose the degree of whiteness that you want. While some people might go for the ‘whitest white’ they can possibly achieve, others may just want the whiteness of their teeth improved by a few subtle shades.

‘Holiday smile’ or longer term whitening?

A teeth whitening procedure can be used to provide you with a great looking smile for a special occasion. Perhaps you are getting married or attending a wedding and want to look your very best, or even if you want to look and feel great on your annual holiday. Many people do have this treatment as a ‘one off’ and that is fine, but some people decide to maintain their new whiteness when they have it done as they are so pleased with the outcome. This can be done quite easily and there are no risks to having the procedure repeated in order to achieve a steady degree of whiteness. If you are unhappy with your discoloured teeth but perhaps reluctant to jump from that to a very white smile, we can help you to plan your treatments so that your teeth improve gradually over time to avoid a dramatic change if you prefer to be more discreet about the improvements.

Can anyone have their teeth whitened?

In general, the answer is yes but with a few caveats. The advice given by the General Dental Council ( https://www.gdc-uk.org/ ) is that teeth whitening shouldn’t be carried out until the age of 18, except in restricted cases.  Although there is no real evidence to suggest that it is dangerous in these situations, it is advised that the procedure is also not carried out on pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding.

Finally, there are those who ‘can’ have the procedure but for whom it will probably be less effective. This would especially apply to people with badly stained teeth, such as from smoking. There is nothing to stop you from trying this treatment if you wish to do so, but we may advise that you might be disappointed with the results. The reality is that if your teeth are heavily stained, you are more likely to benefit from having porcelain veneers fitted. Although this does require a minor invasive treatment, many of our Bedford patients have benefited from this treatment over the years. It is a great way of improving not only badly stained teeth but those that are chipped or cracked as well.

If you are currently unhappy with the way that your teeth look and would like to have a nicer looking smile for the warmer months ahead, why not arrange to have a consultation with one of our cosmetic dental team who will be able to offer their advice and put an action plan into place.
